Recording Guide

This guide walks you through recording a web automation script from start to finish.

Prerequisites

What You NeedWhere to Get It
Qinfinite Web Recorder extensionInstall from your browser's extension store
A Qinfinite platform accountContact your organization's Qinfinite administrator
A target websiteAny HTTP/HTTPS website you want to automate

Recording from the Platform

This is the standard workflow when you have a Qinfinite account:

Step 1: Open Web Automation

Navigate to the Web Automation module in the Qinfinite platform. Click the Recorder tab.

Step 2: Connect the Extension

The platform automatically detects whether the Qinfinite Web Recorder extension is installed. You'll see one of three statuses:

StatusMeaning
ConnectedExtension is installed and communicating with the platform.
CheckingPlatform is attempting to detect the extension (up to 3 seconds).
DisconnectedExtension is not installed or not enabled. Install it and refresh the page.

Step 3: Select a Browser Tab

Once connected, the recorder displays all open browser tabs with their title, URL, and favicon. Select the tab you want to record on.

note

The recorder can only capture actions on HTTP and HTTPS pages. Browser internal pages (chrome://, edge://, about:) are not supported.

Step 4: Start Recording

Click Start Recording. The selected tab comes to focus, and the recording control box appears on the page.

If this is your first recording, a guided tour highlights each control. Follow it or click Skip Tour.

Step 5: Perform Your Actions

Interact with the website naturally:

  • Click links, buttons, menus, and other elements.
  • Type into input fields, search boxes, and text areas.
  • Select options from dropdowns.
  • Navigate between pages — the recorder captures URL changes automatically as launch actions.
  • Switch tabs — supported when the new tab is opened from the recording page (a link with target="_blank", a window.open() call). A tab you open yourself (keyboard shortcut, the browser's own new-tab button) isn't linked to the recording and won't be picked up automatically.

Each action appears in real-time in the control box action list.

Step 6: Pause When Needed

Click the Pause button to temporarily stop capturing. This is useful when you need to:

  • Read content on the page without recording unnecessary clicks.
  • Interact with the recorder control box (editing actions, adding conditions).
  • Navigate to a reference page without recording the navigation.

Click Resume to continue capturing.

Step 7: Add Conditions (Optional)

For dynamic flows, add conditional blocks:

  1. Click More (...) → Add Condition.
  2. Click on a page element to use as the condition target.
  3. Choose: IF (element exists), IF-NOT (element absent), or MULTI-IF (compound conditions).
  4. Perform the actions that should only run when the condition is met.
  5. Click End Condition to close the block.

Step 8: Add Input Variables (Optional)

To make the script reusable across environments or accounts, click More (...) → Input Variables and define a name, default value, description, and whether each variable is required. Reference a variable in any action's value using {{variableName}} syntax — see Input Variables.

Step 9: Stop and Transfer

Click Stop to finish recording. A summary dialog shows:

  • Total actions captured
  • Breakdown by action type (clicks, inputs, navigation, etc.)

Transfer the script to the Qinfinite platform to save, edit, and execute it.

Demo Recording (Without Platform)

You can try the recorder without a Qinfinite account:

  1. Click the extension icon in your browser toolbar.
  2. Navigate to any website.
  3. Click Start Recording in the extension popup.
  4. Perform actions on the page — they appear in the recording control box.
  5. Click Stop when done. The summary dialog provides transfer options.
note

Demo recordings can be transferred to a Qinfinite instance by entering its URL manually, or transferred to an already-open Qinfinite tab.

tip

Since there's no script editor available in demo mode, define any input variables you need directly in the extension: More (...) → Input Variables. They're carried along with the recording when you transfer it.

Tips for Better Recordings

TipWhy
Use stable elementsPrefer elements with clear IDs, names, or aria-labels over positional selectors.
Avoid dynamic pagesWait for pages to fully load before clicking.
Pause before navigating awayIf you need to check something on another page, pause first.
Use the compatibility analyserToggle it on to catch potential issues before execution.
Edit selectors after recordingIf the recorder captured a fragile selector, click the action and update identifiers.
Keep scripts focusedRecord one logical flow per script rather than combining multiple workflows.

Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
Control box doesn't appearEnsure the extension is enabled. Refresh the page and try again.
Actions not being capturedCheck if recording is paused (amber dot). Ensure you're on an HTTP/HTTPS page.
Extension shows disconnectedReinstall the extension and refresh the Qinfinite platform page.
Clicks on the control box are recordedThey shouldn't be — the recorder filters out its own UI elements. If this happens, delete the action.
Iframes not recordingThe extension injects into iframes automatically, but cross-origin restrictions on some sites may prevent it.
